The Käpylä Music Institute provides comprehensive music education following either the traditions of Western classical music or traditional folk music. We are located at the peaceful surroundings of the Käpylä district in Helsinki. Under the tuition of our highly educated and experienced teachers people of all ages and musical backgrounds can improve their skills and enjoy music as a hobby.
Early Childhood Music Education
Early childhood music education includes Music Play School groups for children ages of 0–6 years and Preparatory Musical Training groups for children ages of 6–10 years. The groups have no entrance exams and they are filled in order of enrollment. Music Play School provides carefully planned musical play sessions that bring joy for children and their parents, support the development of the child and give a solid base for future music studies.
Preparatory Musical Training groups provide more specific training in a range of instruments. In addition to building instrumental skills Musical Training groups develop the child’s sense of melody and rhythm as well as readiness for musical invention. The duration of studies is one school year and the groups start every August.
Instrumental Music Studies
Instrumental Music Studies follow the national curriculum of Basic Education in Arts offering individual studies in the chosen instrument or singing. Entrance interviews and possible exams are held each year in May and no previous music studies are required. When entering the institute one chooses the preferred instrument either from the Classical or Folk Music Department. The Classical Department offers also an opportunity to study with the Suzuki method.
Instrumental music studies begin often at age of 6–9 but when studying with the Suzuki method one can start the studies as early as the age of 3. The studies of brass instruments can also begin at a later age. The classical singing studies can usually begin at the age 16–18 years or later.
Instrumental Music Studies include
- a weekly instrumental lesson (30–45 min)
- a weekly group lesson (an orchestra, a band or other group)
- musical theory and history lessons
- performing at concerts or taking part in projects
- optional studies
Instrumental studies require regular training at home. Thus the involvement and support of the parents is very important.
Open Department
The Open Department of Käpylä Music Institute offers private instrumental lessons of 30 minutes for people of all ages and open instrumental and singing group tuition as well as workshops for the youth and adults.
Private instrumental lessons can be bought in packages of 3, 10, 15 or 20 lessons. There’s no entrance interviews, exams or age limits. The lessons are an excellent option for those who want to try out playing an instrument or continue their previous studies. The student must have his own instrument. The instrumental tuition available varies every semester and the enrollment is nonstop during the semesters.
Open instrumental and singing group tuition is arranged by the institute’s Folk Music Department and it offers study possibilities for beginners or more advanced folk music enthusiasts. There are groups dedicated for specific instruments (e.g. ukulele, kantele, violin etc.) or bands and orchestras where one can enjoy playing with other instrumentalists. Groups start every August and they last throughout the autumn and spring semesters.
